CHAPTER 19
This time, we suggested Maddie invite Nedra to stay at our house. Brett made a grocery run to get the foods the girls wanted before we left the house. The crowd at the piano bar differed only in the number of couples and no large groups. There were a few tables of three or four men and some of only women. The bar seats were all taken. At least I didnât need to use my arm to sing along or drink a glass of wine. The same guy, Eddie, was on the piano.
Fabry smiled and begrudgingly commented, âI like this place. Tonight, we arenât the oldest ones here either.â
Vanna punched his arm. âBesides that you like this place, why exactly are we here? Iâm not complaining, mind you. I like it here, too.â
âSomeone abducted the victim from here on a Saturday night. Iâm hoping that we get a word with Emory about who the regulars are and if he remembers seeing them that night. Or if any of them were bothering Drake. Weâve already got the court order for a list of the credit card users from that night. Maybe we get a lead. We need something.â
Brett snickered. âIâm not sure our guy comes here regularly, abducts, and drugs women. FBI doesnât see enough comparison points for this case to be part of their investigations. They think this was a one and done. Still, weâre not so sure. Unless Emory can identify some customer that didnât deal with rejection well, we can just enjoy the evening. I might even drag Sheridan onto the dance floor, cast and all.â
âHear, hear! That sounds like a great idea.â Vanna high-fived Brett and Fabry groaned. Our drinks arrived along with chips and queso. We sang along and enjoyed the night out for entertainment. Once others danced, Fabry and Vanna joined them. I leaned into Brett and he put his arm around me.
Vanna came back to the table alone and signaled for a trip to the restroom. We weaved our way through the tables until a woman collided with us and almost knocked me down.
In her late twenties, her top was askew, and she muttered, âSorry, Donât feel well.â Vanna and I exchanged glances. The woman was having trouble standing up and teetered. As Vanna held her shoulder so she didnât fall, the woman muttered, âFoggy.â
I grabbed her arm with my good one, concerned with her wellbeing. âWhy donât you come sit down with us?â
Vanna nodded, her lips pinched, and put an arm around the womanâs waist on her other side and together we moved her toward our table. âIâm Vanna.â I added, âIâm Sheridan.â
We hadnât gotten far and Fabry sprinted over. He smiled through a clenched jaw. âWhoâs your friend?â
âHolly. Iâm Holly.â She muttered and tripped. Fabry caught her, and I moved out of the way. Brett was standing up and grabbed a chair from another table, signaling a waitress as he did.
Holly sat down and put her head down on the table. I rubbed her back.
